MASSE CONGRATULATES UNIVERSITY ON FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ENGINEERING BUILDING
Federal money for the new facility was made possible by strong advocacy

Ottawa, On- Today, Brian Masse, M. P. (Windsor West) and NDP Industry, Automotive, and Border Critic, congratulated the University of Windsor on receiving funding from the federal government for the new engineering building.

“I want to congratulate the University of Windsor on its strong advocacy and making an effective case for the needed new engineering facility. Furthermore, I would like to thank the Minister of Industry, on this specific project, for acting quickly after this issue was raised at committee,” Masse stated

The University of Windsor received $40 million from the federal government today for its recently approved $112 million engineering complex. Masse, during the May 5th meeting of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science, and Technology, asked the Minister of Industry about the University’s proposal. TRANSCRIPT OF MAY 5 HOUSE OF COMMONS STANDING COMMITTEE ON INDUSTRY, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY:

Mr. Brian Masse:
Mr. Minister, the automotive engineering building at the University of Windsor is shovel-ready and meets the criteria you've outlined. What's the delay in funding this project, especially given the conditions in Windsor right now?

Hon. Tony Clement:
There's no delay. We are going through a process of working with the Province of Ontario. The designated minister is Minister Smitherman. At the end of the review of those proposals—I think we have something like close to 200 proposals in Ontario. We are going to continue to review those and hope to have an announcement out soon.

Mr. Brian Masse:
Okay. Well, thank you, Mr. Minister. With the current conditions in Windsor, I hope this will move fast.

Hon. Tony Clement:
Yes, and in fact I took the time, you should know, Mr. Masse, to meet directly with the proponents to hear their side of the story, and that was a very productive meeting.

Mr. Brian Masse:
Thank you for doing that.
