Dear Mr. Shaw,
I am writing you today to thank you for your consideration in recent months of purchasing the A-Channel Windsor. Although the purchase of this station by Shaw Communications did fall through, I do want to thank you on behalf of my community for your attempts to ensure that our local Windsor news remains accessible to our community.
As you are likely aware, CTV publicly released today their commitment to keep the A-Channel Windsor open for the 2009-2010 license year. My community will continue to benefit from this service and are very pleased at this decision and commitment to local television.
At the same time, I would like to follow-up on a meeting between myself and Mr. Ken Stein, your Senior Vice President of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs which was held in my Ottawa office on April 29, 2009, and on our discussions afterwards regarding the future of local television in my riding of Windsor, Ontario.
As we discussed in our meeting, and in the House of Commons Standing Committee on Heritage Meetings here in Ottawa, many residents in my community subscribe to Star Choice Satellite as their primary means of television, including news stations. To our disappointment, local news is not available in your package to our community, yet we are able to subscribe to multiple pornographic broadcasts and in addition there are several pay-per-view slots also exclusively dedicated to this R-rated programming. As I have made clear, I find this completely unacceptable.
I am once again respectfully requesting that Shaw Communications Inc., in a good will gesture, and in a spirit to attempt to help save local television, switch one of these pornography channels or pay-per-view channels, and instead replace it with the A-Channel Windsor now that we have assurances that this station will be broadcast by CTV.
Again, I thank you for your consideration of purchasing the A-Channel Windsor from CTV which also shows your dedication to local television broadcasting. I look forward to your response on this matter of ensuring access to local news for residents of my community via their Star Choice satellite television. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.
